This picture is actually of a giant sequoia tree, not a redwood. They're somewhat related but different species. Sequoias only grow on the eastern slopes of the Sierra Nevadas, while redwoods grow along the Northern California coast. Both types of trees have a reddish tint to their bark, but redwoods are taller and skinnier, while sequoias are extremely massive with huge diameters but not quite as tall. The tallest tree in the world is a redwood, the biggest tree (by mass) is a sequoia. And I've hugged them both. :)
