George, many areas have hazardous material recycling programs that happily take CFL's. Also, where were you and your ilk whenever people started throwing out the old tube style fluorescents? LED bulbs are a great next step, but they're not priced for the masses yet. We've used CFL's for the last six or seven years, and we've NEVER broken one and any that have died have been recycled (as well as a warranty replacement procured in one case).

It is not the federal governments job to tell us what light bulb to buy. Next it will be single ply toilet paper instead of double ply.

Much less the problem we will have in 5 to 11 years when everybody throws their first set of cfl bulbs into the landfill with all that mercury. LED bulbs are the way to go if you really want to hug the world.

I know that all electronics ie; the flourscent bulb, is affected by voltage. the higher the voltage the less 'life span' of the electronics. the power companies all are supplying higher voltages because it is cheaper for them to make electricity and supply it. the result is a dramatic decrease in the life of the incandescent bulb and most likely the flourscent also. the manufacturer of these bulbs and all other electronics are fully aware of the decreased life of their products due to the increase of voltage over the nominal 120 volts. this higher voltage definitely adds to their profit and that is the reason that we have not heard from them. go figure
