One Is the Loneliest Number
While watching video of Al Gore’s recent talk at TED (which is quite good), I was struck by a particular slide he showed. The slide had a list showing all of the countries that attended the Kyoto climate talks. Highlighted on that list was the single remaining country yet to sign on to the Kyoto Protocol. Guess which one it was!
USA, the capitalist, Imperialist, greatest Nuclear Power, with the most effective military and greatest technological prowess of all nations and ruler of all the world, will tell the rest of the world when it is time to change and what changes it will tolerate. At that time, they will finance, direct and profit from the changes. Ask George Bush; until they say so, nothing will happen. not the genocide in Darfur, not the melting of polar ice, not the melting of the glaciers in Iceland, not the starving Asians, not the AIDS in Africa, not the rising price of oil and gas at home, not Chinese manufacturing supremacy, not the population growth and manufacturing explosion in India, not the falling markets for American products, not the falling value of the American dollar, not inflation, not the degradation of American ‘dumb down’ schools, not the rising American crime rate, not the degrading American environment, not the superior A380 airbus from Europe, not the dying of GM,Ford and Chrysler, not the advance to #1 in America for Toyota, not the Brazilian energy-balanced economy, not the Palestinian concentration camps, not Ben Ladin running free, not the loss of Afghanistan, not the development of solar electricity in the deserts of the world, not practical diesel cars for America, not 80 hour weeks with both parents working just to eat, Only sunshine and lolipops and old Disney movies two cars in every garage, both with V-8s, and weekends off with the family for the elite American. You Bet your nuc’ed ass!
