What is Ecoscraps Potting Mix

Potting mix is used when growing plants, herbs, and vegetables in containers. You may be asking why not just use soil from my garden? Plants grown in your garden have access to earths ecosystem, and with additions like compost, will do great. However in containers, plants are isolated from this ecosystem and as a result have unique soil requirements.

Ecoscraps organic potting mix contains a blend of processed pine bark or wood chips, environmentally friendly coconut-coir, perlite, and compost made from yard trimmings and food scraps.

Benefits of Ecoscraps Potting Mix

  • Rich in Organic Material
  • Water Retention
  • Improved Water Drainage and Aeration
  • Decreases Soil Density
  • Strong Soil Structure for Root Growth

Rich In Organic Material

Compost is added to Ecoscraps organic potting mix to promote healthy sustained plant growth. Compost in potting mix has all the same benefits as compost in your native garden soil. It will improve soil structure, increase organic material, and retain moisture.

Water Retention

Holding and conserving water is important when planting in containers. This allows plants to use water efficiently. It also helps reduce overall water waste. Many potting mixes use peat moss to help retain water. However peat moss is a limited resource that is harvested. Ecoscraps found a more sustainable alternative to peat moss, coconut coir. Coconut coir provides the same benefits as peat moss but is made from coconut husks, which is renewable. Coconut coir is able to hold a lot of water by increasing its overall volume, similar to a sponge.

Improved Water Drainage and Aeration

While retaining water is necessary when planting in containers, the ability to drain excess water is equally as important. Ecoscraps organic potting mix contains perlite. Perlite is a white mineral that is used to soften the potting mix. By adding perlite, the soil is able to easily drain water as well as aerate the soil. Aeration and drainage are important for overall plant health in containers.

Decreases Soil Density

Soil that is dense makes it difficult for young plants to grow roots. Dense soil also decreases water drainage and aeration. By adding perlite, Ecoscraps organic potting mix is able to decrease soil density. This in turn makes it easier for roots to grow due to more air in the soil.

Strong Soil Structure for Root Growth

Healthy root growth will lead to overall plant success. Roots act as a lifeline to the plant. Nutrients and water move up the root system into the plant. Ecoscraps adds small pieces of pin bark and wood chips to our organic potting mix to help strengthen overall soil structure. A strong soil structure will help roots branch out and grow throughout the potting mix.
