Is Earth Day a Communist Plot?

earthDid you know that Earth Day is also Lenin’s birthday? According to some sources, the choice of April 22 in 1970 as the first Earth Day was intentional as it was also the 100th birthday celebration of Lenin. According to Leftbooks.com, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported:

When Earth Day started in 1970, one of Georgia’s leading politicians tried to warn President Nixon, state governors and other national leaders that it was a Communist plot in disguise.

Others view the choice of April 22 to celebrate Earth Day as a distraction from this birthday celebrated in other parts of the world.

Eliot Spitzer’s Hooker Habit: Bad for the Environment?

eliotspitzer2.jpgBad for his marriage and his political future? Definitely. But the environment? Can’t be… right? Jonathon Morgan at Green Daily begs to differ, though, and comes up with five ways that Governor Spitzer’s expensive habits are bad for the planet. Shame on you, Governor!

Video: Why is Bush Opposed to Renewable Energy Tax Act?

H.R. 5351, the Renewable Energy and Energy Conservation Tax Act that was passed last week by the House, is facing strong opposition from the White House. President Bush has repeatedly said that he will veto any bill that repeals tax breaks for big oil to fund renewable energy development. Why? Apparently, this administration has already done enough for renewable energy. And according to President Bush, “This administration has done more for renewables than any President.” Really? Based on what metric?

Just Three Sustainable Homes Built in UK!

gordon.jpgIt’s long been a concern of mine - a concern that has been growing in recent months. How exactly do you get the public on board, get them to make green choices? Gordon Brown dreams of 100,000 sustainable homes being built.

Only 99,997 to go then.

Only three sustainable homes built in UK so far.

2008 State of the Union Drinking Game

Well, this is sort of a stretch for a Green Options blog, but I couldn’t resist. If you like to take your booze with a floater of politics, or vice versa, then you must read on. If you are a teetotaler, you could just as easily substitute kombucha, yerba mate, or even wheatgrass in place of the alcoholic beverages required for this game. What am I talking about? The official rules for Monday’s 2008 State of the Union Address Drinking Game have finally arrived. And if the prognosticators are as accurate as they have been in previousbush-pressesc.jpg years, those who play along might want to call in “sick” for work on Tuesday in advance. I have attempted to play this game a couple of times before and had an absolut(e) blast. From the website:

The general rules of the game are no different from any other drinking game. A drink is either a shot or a good gulp from a beer (or cider). Different events call for different numbers of drinks and all you do is watch the speech and play along. If all goes well, you’ll be unconscious by the time they show the other party’s response.

An eco-example from the Official Rules:

Every time the President introduces an environmental/energy goal that will be met…

…by the end of his presidency…………………………………………………………..1 drink

…by the end of the next administration (assume 8 years)……………….2 drinks

…sometime after the end of the next administration……………………….3 drinks

Please do not drink alcohol in excess. Be sure to practice safe, responsible democratizing.

Decide on Bears First, then Oil, Congressional panel says

polarbear.jpg The U.S. government must decide first if polar bears are threatened by climate change before it opens part of their icy habitat to oil drilling, the head of a congressional environment panel said on Thursday.

“Rushing to allow drilling in polar bear habitat before protecting the bear would be the epitome of this administration’s backward energy policy, a policy of drill first and ask questions later,” Rep. Ed Markey said at a hearing of the House (of Representatives) Select Committee on Energy Independence and Global Warming, which he chairs.

New Yorkers: Make Two Calls for E-Waste Recycling

ewaste.JPG“Municipalities around the world are working to make electronics manufacturers responsible for cleaning up their own e-toxic mess, including New York City. In fact, on January 14, there will be a hearing in the City Council Chambers about a bill that would require manufacturers of electronics sold within the City to take responsibility for the ‘end-of-life management’ of their products.”
